Management of data center power consumption is becoming increasingly important as data centers grow both in quantity and size. The electricity bill of a data center can easily reach millions of dollars. Therefore, reducing the electricity cost of data centers has received much attention from researchers.
This research is about how to effectively use Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in data center to help reduce its electricity cost. We consider using the BESS to actively shape power consumption in data centers and provide profitable grid services, such as regulation service and demand response at the same time. We aim to develop an optimal online battery control strategy which optimize the battery usage in terms of minimal electricity cost and battery degradation cost.
This research can help large IT companies to improve power management in their data center, greatly reduce their electricity usage, operational expense and carbon footprint.”
